What Fats are?

Fats are the important parts of our diet. But there are different types of fats some are good for our health and other is bad for our health. Our body requires some good fats to function properly and also help to prevent disease. Although Fats are of different types, we can divide them into two categories:

1. Saturated Fats OR Bad Fats

Saturated fats are also called bad fats. It means these fats which are bad for our health. Eating saturated fats in high amount can increase the risk of heart disease and high blood cholesterol levels. Saturated fats are found in animal-based products and packed foods.

What are some natural sources of saturated fats?

  • Fatty snacks foods 
  • Deep fried and high-fat takeaway foods - hot chips, pizza, and hamburgers 
  • Cakes and high-fat muffins 
  • Sweet and savory biscuits 
  • Pastries and pies 
  • Meat- Fatty cuts of beef, pork and lamb and chicken (chicken skin)
  • Palm Oil and Coconut Oil
  • Cream, butter, and cheese

2. Unsaturated Fats of Good fats

Unsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature. These fats are good for our health and they are the important part of our diet. Unsaturated fats help to reduce the risk of heart disease and also lower cholesterol levels. So it is very important for you to incorporate foods in your diet which are high in unsaturated fats.

There are two types of unsaturated fats:

i). Polyunsaturated fats

Omega-3 fats which are found in fish. Also, omega-6 fats which are found in some oils such as soybeans and safflower oil, along with some nuts.
  • Sunflower, corn, soybean, and flaxseed oils 
  • Walnuts 
  • Flax seeds 
  • Fish 
  • Canola oil – though higher in monounsaturated fat, it’s also a good source of polyunsaturated fat. 

ii). Monounsaturated fats

These types of fats are found in: 
  • Olive, peanut, and canola oils 
  • Avocados 
  • Nuts such as almonds, hazelnuts, and pecans 
  • Seeds such as pumpkin and sesame seeds
