What is BCAA, benefits and how does it work?

There are 80 types of amino acids present in our human body. But our body uses only 20 amino acids. Further, these 20 amino acids are divided into two categories- non-essential amino acids- these amino acids are generated by your body itself. If you are not consuming these amino acids through your diet then body itself generate them according to your body’s need. The second type is essential amino acids- these amino acids are found in various foods so we have to consume these through our diet. There are nine essential amino acids but three of them are very necessary for our body. Now the term BCAA comes into existence. BCAA supplement is a combination of these three essential amino acids- acids Leucine, Valine, and Isoleucine.

Main Amino Acids in BCAA

All the three amino acids are important for our body and all are present in BCAA supplements.
  1. Leucine: This amino acid uses the fat as energy.
  2. Valine: This amino acid uses the carbohydrates as energy.
  3. Isoleucine: Uses both fats and carbohydrates for energy.

What is the role of BCAA?

During the workout, if our body doesn’t have sufficient amount of amino acids, then our body will go in the catabolic state. It’s that state in which our body takes the required energy from our muscles which results in muscle loss. In this case, you can’t lose weight nor build muscles. So you’ve two options- first, incorporate essential amino acids in your diet or second consume BCAA supplements so you get the proper amount of BCAA.

What are the benefits of BCAA?

  • Increase lean muscle mass.
  • Enhance muscle protein synthesis and inhibit the breakdown of muscle cells.
  • Improve insulin sensitivity.
  • Increases muscle metabolism.
  • Support fat loss.
  • Muscle repair.
