As the name suggests, genital warts affect the moist tissues of the genital area. They are one of the most common types of sexually transmitted infections. Nearly all sexually active people will become infected with at least one type of human papillomavirus (HPV), the virus that causes genital warts, at some point during their lives. Women are somewhat more likely than men to develop genital warts. Genital warts may look like small, flesh-colored bumps or have a cauliflower-like appearance. In many cases, the warts are too small to be visible.

Home Remedies for Genital Warts

There are several prescribed medicines that can treat genital warts but you can also try some easy home remedies to get rid of genital warts.

1. Garlic

Garlic is best known for antiviral properties; so it can easily take care of the virus that causes genital warts.
What you will need?
  • Few Garlic Cloves 
  • Lukewarm Water 

The Process to do this:
  • Crush a few garlic cloves until it becomes a smooth paste. 
  • Now, apply the paste to the affected skin. 
  • Cover the area with a bandage, and leave it on for one to two hours. 
  • Remove the bandage and wash the area with lukewarm water. 
  • Repeat two or three times daily until you get rid of genital warts.

2. Castor Oil

The odorless and tasteless castor oil is used to treat many skin problems, including genital warts. The ricinoleic acid present in castor oil has anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties that help treat genital warts.

What will you need?

  • Cotton Ball 
  • Pure Castor Oil 
  • Warm Water 

The Process to do This:
  • Soak a cotton ball in cold-pressed pure castor oil. 
  • Put the cotton ball over the wart and secure it with tape. Leave it on overnight. 
  • The next morning, remove the cotton ball and clean the area with warm water. 
  • Gently exfoliate the area with a washcloth or loofah sponge to remove the dead skin cells. 
  • Repeat this remedy daily until the wart becomes dark and eventually falls off.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a popular and highly effective home remedy for genitals warts. The acetic acid in apple cider vinegar is corrosive in nature. When it comes in contact with the affected skin, it helps wear down the abnormal growth of the skin tissues. Plus, its antiviral property helps kill the virus that causes genital warts.

What will you need?
  • Petroleum Jelly 
  • Cotton Ball 
  • Apple Cider Vinegar 
  • Warm Water 

The Process to do this:
  • Apply petroleum jelly on the skin surrounding the genital wart to protect the unaffected skin. 
  • Moisten a cotton ball with apple cider vinegar and apply it to the affected area. 
  • Use an adhesive tape to hold the cotton ball in place for two to three hours. 
  • Remove the cotton ball and wash the area with warm water. 
  • After half an hour, repeat the process again. 
  • Use this treatment two to three times daily for a few days or until the genital wart is completely gone.

4. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera has some properties that are good for treating genital warts. Aloe Vera is also rich in antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. Aloe Vera can also soothe the skin and relieve itching.

What will you need?
  • Fresh Aloe Vera Leaf 
  • Cotton Ball 
  • Lukewarm Water 

The Process to do this:

  • Cut open an Aloe Vera leaf and extract the gel. 
  • Dip a cotton ball in the gel and apply it directly to the affected area. 
  • Secure the cotton ball with tape and leave it on overnight. 
  • The next morning, remove the cotton ball and wash the gel off with warm water. 
  • Repeat once daily for one month or until your warts are gone.

5. Onion

Onion is also an excellent antimicrobial agent that helps reduce the spread of the virus that causes genital warts. 

What will you need?
  • Onions- 2 
  • Salt- 1 teaspoon 
  • Lukewarm Water 
The Process to do this:
  • Cut two onions into slices and sprinkle one teaspoon of salt over them. 
  • Cover and let it sit overnight. 
  • The next morning, put the onions in a sieve and press with a spoon to extract the juice. 
  • Apply this juice to genital warts. 
  • Leave it on for one hour, and then rinse it off with warm water and pat dry. 
  • Repeat this two or three times daily until you get rid of warts.

6. Tree Tea Oil

Tea tree oil is another very effective treatment for genital warts. It is very beneficial due to its antiviral and antiseptic qualities. Repeat either of the following remedies two or three times a day until the wart disappears.

What will you need?
  • Tea tree oil: 4-5 drops 
  • Lukewarm water 

The process to do this:
  • Mix together 4-5 drops of tea tree oil with 1 tablespoon of almond oil or olive oil. Dab the oil mix on warts, and leave it on for one to two hours. Then rinse it off with warm water. 
  • Add a few drops of tea tree oil to warm bath water. Soak in this bath for 15 to 20 minutes.

7. Baking Soda

Baking soda has antiseptic and strong anti-inflammatory prhelpies that can help to combat the virus that causes genital warts. In fact, baking soda creates an unfriendly environment for the virus to survive and thereby helps stop it from lingering. 

What will you need?
  • Baking Soda

The Process to do this:
  • After taking a shower, pat dries your body except for the genitals. 
  • Sprinkle some baking soda onto the affected area. 
  • Leave it on overnight and wash it off in the morning. 
  • Repeat every other day until the genital warts are gone. 

8. Banana Peel

Eating bananas help boost the immune system to fight off the virus that causes genital warts. You can also use banana peel to treat genital warts. Banana peel has strong antioxidants as well as various enzymes that can dissolve warts safely.

What will you need?
  • Banana Peel 

The Process to do this:
  • Cut a piece of banana peel according to the size of your wart. 
  • Place the inside of the peel against the wart and secure it with tape or a bandage. 
  • Leave it on overnight. 
  • Remove the peel the next morning. 
  • Repeat daily for a few weeks or until you get rid of warts.

9. Fig Leaf 

As simple a herb as a fig leaf can cure your genital warts without any mess and that too in a way that they never come back. The enzyme ‘Ficain’ in the milky sap of plant seems to do the wonder. You won’t even feel any burning or stinging when using fig leaf sap for genital warts.

What will you need?
  • Fig leafs 
The Process to do this:
  • Break a fig leaf to extract its milky sap. 
  • Dab some of this fig leaf sap on your warts. 
  • Repeat this 2-3 times a day. 
  • If this remedy works for you, your warts will completely disappear in 2 week’s time.

10. Potatoes

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian medicine talks about potatoes to be used to cure genital warts. Potatoes, as against the popular belief, are very nutritious with lots of Vitamin C, potassium and even antioxidants in them. It is so simple a remedy and because potatoes are so readily available, there seems no harm in trying this potato remedy for your genital warts too. The enzymes in it might work and remove your warts!

What will you need?
  • Potatoes 

The Process to do this:
  • Take 1-2 potatoes and cut thick slices out of them. 
  • Rub these potato slices on your genital warts. 
  • Repeat this several times a day. 
  • Do it at least for 2 weeks to see if potatoes are making any positive difference in removing genital warts.
